  • Is Mecca a "Safe" City?

Our holy book, the Quran, describes Mecca, the city where our beloved Prophet was born and raised and where he began his call to Islam, as a "safe city."

Some enemies of Islam question the "safety" of Mecca based on the floods that occurred there, and, in their own way, claim that the relevant verses are "erroneous."

To evaluate the issue with such a shallow perspective, without knowing what the verses in question say and what they mean, and without considering their historical and geopolitical context, only makes those who make such an assessment look "ridiculous."

There are many verses in the Quran that point to Mecca being a "safe city": 2/125-126, 3/97, 28/57, 29/67, 95/3 and 106/4.

2/125. The verse relates to the time of the Prophet Abraham, and it states that Mecca has always been a protected place.

As is known, the Arabian Peninsula is located in a region where three continents are closest to each other. Despite its central location, the Hejaz, in particular, is extremely well-protected against external interventions. This is because, as seen in the diagram above, it has a very mountainous terrain surrounded by vast deserts. The Hejaz borders the Nefud, Dehna, and Rubulhali deserts from north to south. High mountains separate the coastal strip called Tihama from the aforementioned large deserts – hence the name "Hejaz," derived from the verb "to separate."

Thus, despite its central location, this protected geographical structure makes Mecca and its surroundings "reliable."

During the time of our Prophet, the Byzantine and Sasanian (Persian) empires were the two superpowers of the Old World. In Syria and Iraq, two puppet states ruled under the influence of these two great powers: the Ghassanids and the Hiraids. The Yemen region, meanwhile, had first fallen under the control of Abyssinia, and then Iran. However, the Hejaz, far from the influence of these powerful states, lacked a political authority, a unified state.

Thus, when Allah says, "We made it safe" (2:125), "whoever enters it will be safe" (3:97), "a safe place" (95:3), and reminds the Quraysh of this (106:4), He is pointing to the geopolitical importance of the Hejaz region!

Indeed, the verses "They said, 'If we follow guidance with you, we will be uprooted from our homes'... Did We not settle them in a secure sanctuary where the produce of everything is gathered as a provision from Us? (...) Did they not see that We made a secure sanctuary for them while people were being uprooted from their surroundings? (...)" (28/57 and 29/67) also express this truth.

From this perspective, although our beloved Prophet and the Muslims around him initially suffered considerable hardship, it can be seen that the fact that Hijaz was a region outside the control of major powers paved the way for the rapid spread of Islam in Arabia and for Muslims to gain sufficient strength before coming into contact with major political powers.
